The ongoing civil war in Sudan has caused colleges to close down, denying students an opportunity to continue with their regular study schedule. Rwanda government has opened doors for 200 Sudanese medical students to continue their education in University of Rwanda.
The students from Sudan’s University of Medical Sciences and Technology in the capital of Khartoum are to study at the University of Rwanda’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Didace Kayihura Muganga, vice chancellor of the University of Rwanda, told Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, the national broadcaster, that the majority of the students are in their final year, requiring practical training, particularly in the fields of general medicine and dentistry.

He said the University of Rwanda was in talks with the Sudanese university on matters of student exchange before the conflict broke out, but the conflict accelerated the need.

“After teaching activities were halted and students were displaced, the university requested the Rwandan government to admit at least 200 students doing general medicine and from the dentistry department to avoid students having a dead year. We are now doing it on a humanitarian basis but looking at a long-term partnership which would allow student and staff exchange programs once peace is restored,” Kayihura said.
