The possibility was discussed by the heads of state of the two countries as part of a working visit that Rwandan president Paul Kagame made to Mozambique today.

« The two state officials focused their attentions on the operation of the airlines of the two countries, which would allow making trips from Mozambique to various parts of the world more swiftly, using Rwandan airlines, taking advantage of the position in which Rwanda is in the world, » Verónica Macamo told the media in Maputo, without giving further details about the operation.

Besides cooperation in the area of aviation, according to Verónica Macamo, the Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, and Rwandan president analysed cooperation between their nations in the economic and defence areas, highlighting the efforts of young soldiers who are on the front line of the fight against terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado, where Rwanda is supporting the Mozambican forces in the fight against rebel groups.

« The two leaders broadly saluted the brave young Mozambicans and Rwandans, who with the support of the forces of the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIM), spare no effort to stop the action of terrorists in our homeland, » the head of Mozambican diplomacy said.

Cabo Delgado province has been terrorised since 2017 by armed violence, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

The insurgency has led to a military response since a year ago with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects, but new waves of violence have emerged south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.

In five years, the conflict has left one million people displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and around 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
