Their discussions also covered Rwanda’s key role in the AU, including contributions to governance, regional security, and conflict resolution. The Chairperson acknowledged and praised Rwanda’s commitment to AU reforms.
On regional security, the Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in the Great Lakes region, particularly in the DRC within the framework of the Luanda and Nairobi processes and working in collaboration with the East African Community and the Southern Africa Development Community. The leaders also discussed the urgent need for sustainable funding for African-led peace operations, including the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The meeting underscored the importance of strengthening the African Peace and Security Architecture to enhance the continent’s ability to prevent and respond to conflicts effectively, and ensuring the architecture remains fit for purpose in addressing Africa’s security challenges.
