120 CONGOLESE SOLDIERS FLEE TO RWANDA AS M23 SECURES GOMA

The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has confirmed the surrender of 120 Congolese soldiers, including members of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), at the Rwanda-DRC border. Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga, the RDF spokesperson, shared the update with Taarifa. By Taarifa

By press time, the surrendered personnel handed over a significant cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, anti-tank weapons, mortars, and RPGs. Additionally, dozens of European mercenaries, including Armenian nationals hired to support FARDC forces, were captured by M23 rebels and remain in custody.

Earlier in the day, stray gunfire and rockets from clashes in Goma killed five Rwandans and injured 30 others in border areas. Brig. Gen. Rwivanga assured the public that the situation remains under control. He also revealed that FDLR fighters attempted to launch rockets into Rwanda but were swiftly neutralized by Rwanda’s air defense systems. Local residents reportedly cheered as the missiles were intercepted and destroyed mid-air.

Rwanda’s border with the DRC remains open but is heavily guarded. Security forces have increased their presence to ensure the safety of residents and to manage the influx of defected soldiers and civilians fleeing the violence. Humanitarian efforts have also been scaled up, with food, medical care, and temporary shelter provided to those crossing into Rwanda.

In Goma, a stark shift from chaos to calm has brought celebrations among residents. Locals expressed relief over the restored order, with no reports of looting or harassment under M23’s control. “For the first time in years, we feel like we can sleep without fear,” said one resident. Businesses have reopened, and daily life is gradually returning to normal.

As the conflict unfolded, approximately 600 United Nations staff members were processed and safely transported to Kigali by Rwanda. The operation, praised for its efficiency, ensured the safety of the personnel amid the escalating violence in Goma.

The fall of Goma has sparked questions about the stability of the DRC’s leadership, as President Felix Tshisekedi faces mounting criticism for his handling of the conflict. The situation underscores the importance of regional collaboration to address the ongoing crisis comprehensively.

Rwanda’s swift and coordinated actions at the border highlight its commitment to ensuring security and stability in the region, even as tensions remain high across the border.
