A week after trading away veteran defender Ike Opara, Sporting Kansas City added another center back to its roster Tuesday, a Rwandan Abdul Rwatubyaye.

Rwatubyaye will join the club, pending his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa, SKC announced.

The 22-year-old spent the last three years with Rayon Sports FC, a club in the Rwanda Premier League. He also has 22 caps with the Rwandan men’s national team, where he’s played in qualifying matches for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. In addition to his senior national team experience, Rwatubyaye has been on Rwanda’s U=17, U-20 and U-23 squads.

Occupying an international spot on SKC’s roster, Rwatubyaye will be under contract for the 2019 season. He’ll have options for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Center back has been a position of focus for SKC’s offseason, especially after trading away Opara to Minnesota for Targeted Allocation Money. In addition to Rwatubyaye, SKC’s depth chart to replace Opara also includes Botond Barath, Andreu Fontas.

SKC will start its Concacaf Champions League schedule Feb. 21 against Deportivo Toluca before opening their MLS season on March 3 against LAFC.
