About Dr. Yves Mugabo

Dr Mugabo discovered a new metabolic enzyme (Glycerol-3-phosphate phosphatase: G3PP) in mammalian cells that directly transforms glucose-derived glycerol-3-phosphate to glycerol.

By diverting glucose as glycerol, G3PP prevents excessive formation and storage of fat in various tissues and attenuates the excessive production of glucose in liver.

Failure to do so represents a risk factor for developing diabetes. The discovery of G3PP is paradigm-changing, as it represents the first enzyme discovered since the 1960s that is central to nutrient metabolism in all mammalian tissues and led to the generation of a patent (WO/2017/020121).
