The contribution of $6,5 million (R89 million) by the United States (US) to the World Food Programme (WFP) will enable the restoration of full food rations to thousands of refugees in Rwanda. By Phyllis Birori, (CAJ News)
Refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi, which are torn by conflict, will mostly benefit.
WFP welcomed the donation by the US government of President Donald Trump. It brings to $10 million (R137 million) the total food and nutrition assistance provided by US and its agencies to Rwanda this year.
« We are incredibly thankful for the continuous support we receive from the American people and specifically for this critical contribution, » said Jean-Pierre de Margerie, WFP Rwanda representative and Country Director.
« Thanks to this generous and timely grant, we will now be able to fully re-instate rations for refugees that we support, » de Margerie added.
Funding shortages had forced WFP to trim assistance to 90 percent in 2017. Persistent funding challenges saw a further reduction of ration sizes to 75 percent in January 2018.
Rwanda hosts some 75 000 Congolese and 55 000 Burundian refugees, who are housed in six camps.
Worsening conflicts in Burundi and DRC have seen an escalation in the number of camp-based refugees.
